After going to the Nottingham Model Railway Exhibition with Nick, Spike and Ian I ended up trying something new...... I bought a model train.... WOoooooop WOOooooooP! Its a white metal and brass model of a crane thingy and a carraige from Finecast.... Now I have always stayed away from "metal" models for some reason, but I am actually liking this kit. The reason why I bought this kit was simple..... I thought it looked cute and could do alot more with it than intended. One of the main things I wanted to do is to add a flickering light for the fire box. The one thing I found with working with white metal is it does need alot of cleaning up, the metal work its self had lots of dimples and imperfections which needed filling.... As you can see below the wires are poking out from the underside, these are for the light inside the fire box thats the size of a grain of rice!!

Once the main frame was built and in primer it needed to be painted black, for this the perfect paint to use was Halfords satin black from a rattle can.... Once dried a little detail could be added, noticing that the finish of the metal was not 100% it actually worked in my favour as I could weather these areas to create rusty parts... As you can see in the picture below its going to sit on a base with some other things going on.... there will be a water tower, rusty old van and two workers chilling while the train is filled up with water.. Once they layout was decided I started adding car body filler to the base to sink the tracks in and add texture for the ground.

Well done with the competition. Railway accessory suppliers turn out so many period/British vehicles, like the van in your display: it's a pity there are too few plastic ones in 1/24. There is a way of using a OO loco in a 1/24 setting: put it on O-16.5 'crazy track', and use a 1/24 driver, and you have a model of a 15" narrow gauge engine. I have a figure from the Preiser range sitting in Dapol's Deltic, with his head and shoulders protruding through a hatch in the roof. For a steam loco you could build a suitable seat on the front of the tender. Oh dear, you've started me thinking again.
