One of the best things Ive found for wooden planking/decking on models are these....... Found at most Fast Food resturants and Cafe's these wooden stiring sticks are fantastic as miniture planks of wood..... Or if you fancy buying them Hobby Craft sell the shorter versions in the craft section.

Because I'm lazy, I use sheets of Evergreen V-groove. On large areas I make wavy scratches on the surface with coarse sandpaper. A coat of Halfords grey plastic primer is allowed to dry, then I apply a not-too-thorough coat of Citadel (=Games Workshop) "Bleached Bone", which is a creamy white. Finally I slosh some "Flesh Wash" over it, and when dry the effect is quite acceptable for dry wood. Leaving out the Bleached Bone coat gives a less blotchy finish, and a darker, slightly greenish shade, which could be used for, say, older and damp wooden buildings.
