Paul Findon and I attended the Classic Commercial Truck Show and truck model show at Gaydon last weekend, We were talking about the future of the SIG and the inevitable shortage of the 'Aardman / Airfix' range of kits, the kits which the SIG has been built upon. I have a couple of suggestion for the future of the SIG which I'd like to open up for discussion.
(1) ... starting from 2014, we each select one model we would like to build on the 'Aardman / Airfix' theme, this would allow us more space to expand into other areas of modelling. Why cut down the number of the usual builds? ... well, one of the reasons is the stash won't last for ever, the kits are becoming more expensive and harder to find. I know the visiting public have become used to seeing our crazy builds but I feel its time we moved on and explored new horizons.
(2) ... we already have an alternate build in place, this year it's 'Military to Civilian' and we already have our first finished model with is a 'Schwimvagen' in the colours of the Italian Emergency Service 'Vigili del Fuoco', but I see no reason why we can't expand on alternative ideas and have a major build. The name of the SIG is 'Beyond the Box' and there's so many new subjects we can tap into by showing what can be done to a standard kit of any genre'. We can still have the fun builds but these would become the smallest part of the display instead of the major part.
So, what do you all think? ...

I wholeheartedly agree and having recently seen 3 van kits going for silly money on eBay. I think all members of the SIG need to bring their ideas to the discussion so we can establish the future of the SIG.

The military to civilian build is a good idea to move forward with Beyond the box & to have similar builds for future years is the way to go theres lots of scope.
Suggestions by members for a future build would allow a more varied view of whats available to use from standard kits including some others may not have dreamt of building.
