Right then, just to give this build a push in the right direction, how about a bit of a competition just for fun, but you never know I may be able to find a silly prize from somewhere? As you can see from the race graphic the board doesn't have a number, well, what I'd like you to do is come up with a race number for the Landrover and tell me your reason why you chose that number? ... Go on, have a go! Don't forget that we now have the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/beyondthebox.sig/ ... if you've not yet liked the page and joined in, come and join us!

Number 69 Nick for the simple reason that, even if the vehicle is upside down, everyone can still read the number!!

Number 69 Nick for the simple reason that, even if the vehicle is upside down, everyone can still read the number!! You and Pat have both suggested that particular number, strange ... I could be adopting that!

Here we go, on the bench. Here's the state of the build as I left it ... ... I'd replaced the kit wheels for a racing set and figured how to fit them with modified axles ... I've had the chance to think about the Landrover and how I want to portray it. The first decision to make is do I want to change the basic look of the kit? ... Well, I thought about making it look more like the original idea for this build ... ... which would mean a lot of scratch building to convert the kit into a Defender, but although it would look more realistic I think I would lose the identity of what I'm attempting to build which is totally fictitious. So where do I start? ... I'm going to leave the basic body shell as it is but add a few scratch build items to compliment the build, the first piece of construction will be the front bumper, off it comes ... ... and the raw materials for the new bumper ... ... which hopefully when finished will look something like this ... ... more soon!

I've had a go at building the crash bar today ... ... it's getting there, not quite the same as the illustration but similar if you sort of squint a little ... I've now got to add the winch and diff protection, more soon!

Almost there, the basic crash guard is in place ... ... also to add to the basic structure will be the winch, a couple of bracings and ... well the big hand just has to be used

Back on to this at the weekend, Ian and I have been invited once again to the annual East Midlands Model Railway Exhibition in Nottingham, a bit of plastic bashing I think ... toot toot!

I managed to do a fair amount of work on the landy at the weekend. The old firewall has been removed and replaced with a newer version which is full cab width and fits rather snugly ... ... I've chopped the old dashboard and made a smaller version, still functional but now there's room for the gadgets ... A basic centre console has been built and installed ready for ... well that's top secret at the moment, Wallace has sworn me to secrecy but the pats pending have been registered and approved ... The front brush bar has been built and installed, and a really beefy job it is too, there's also a flat plate in front ready for the winch which is in build at the moment ... I'm awaiting the drawings for the in car jacking system, handy piece of kit when you get stuck. I've attempted a slight modification of the driving seat, new runners have been mounted and the seat positioned slightly higher for our star driver. Well, I've had to agree to a few small changes as there will only be one driver, no co-pilot on this build, the other seat position will be filled with gadgets, but more on that later ... more soon!

Do you mould your big hand ~ or do you just have lots of them? The 'Big Hand' comes in the Austin A35 kit, it's the automatic starter and it has several uses, seen here on the 2012 Festive Build ...
