Last year, when I told my office colleagues about taking my caravan to Holland, one of them said "Are you going from Heathrow?" That gave me an idea, and I'll be starting on it when I get back from Silverstone after this weekend. Then I've got a second one lined up. Both W&G. And I promise both their bases will be well within limits.

Here's a sneak preview of my two projects, without giving too much away. Wallace's bike has a towing eye in the back of the seat. Gromit's plane will be supported by the end of one wing, so there are two steel rods in the end, and a third one between the wings. The luggage rack is made from two of the soapsud-gun supports. Yes, that is indeed a towball on the back. All this work is just too much for some.

Gromit's flying 'van is now finished, so I need to build the scenic base. Wallace's model is complete, although I have an optional backdrop which can be screwed on if I can smooth out the unsatisfactory surface.

Thanks for the interest, chaps. Looking forward to showing off. All the base-building is complete, just the scenic surfaces to go. Gromit's plane and 'van are ready for positioning in flying mode, so check the tyre pressure, noseweight, unstick speed....

All of a sudden, both models are finished. I've managed to keep the bases within the specified limits: you did say 12 x 24, didn't you? One of them is 9 x 23.8! I'll leave the backdrop off, as the printed sheet bubbled quite a bit, and at 10" high it would have obscured other models. The other is 10.5 x 15.5 . Can't you tell I'm paranoid about this now? Still, limitations stimulate ingenuity. Now I've got the task of tidying up all the rooms I used for modelling. That'll last until SMW, at least.
