Christine and I have dragged a 'van around since 1987, at first it was a 2-berth pulled by a 1.0 Austin Metro: we learned to travel light! After we had two births, we upgraded to a 5-berth and now haul with a Rover 45 2.0 TD. That van lasted 20 years, and this very day we exchanged it for a new 6-berth. We didn't really want anything bigger, but it was the narrowest available and at a special Show price. Why narrow? Even after taking the gate hinges off the house wall, the driveway is two inches wider than the van. There is now electric motor assistance to manhandle it up the slope to the road. I used to camp overnight at IPMS Nationals (imagine a November night in the field at Donington). I remember bribing the car park attendants at Stoneleigh with a morning cuppa, and turning the van into the wind at 1.00am at a farm near Telford. Nowadays I just do a round trip each day and leave the van at home. When we are not holidaying, it makes a quiet modelling room. This year's W&G submissions will suggest a more serene caravanning experience.

Spent the weekend at Silverstone for the British GP. Apart from the actual race day, the weather was atrocious. We arrived on Thursday evening, and the campsite wasn't too bad. Here's our outfit on Friday morning. the gateway is just out of sight on the right. Gradually the surface deteriorated. By the end of the event, most visitors needed help. We managed to turn towards the gateway and cut across at a sharp angle, and escaped without assistance. The main circuit car park was rather worse. We intended to leave on the Sunday evening, but the road outside was blocked by a breakdown truck that had broken down, so we stayed until Monday.
