If it is limited to two builds per member and I only want to build one, can I 'sell' my spare one to Malc so he can build three??
OK, I'll get my coat...

Here's a couple of suggestions for the melting pot ...
Base sizes ~ I've taken the comments so far into account and although I would prefer that the bases are a common size for display conformity, I agree that this particular build may cause its own problems. I suggest therefore that if your model consists of a towing vehicle and a caravan, that the base size should be no more than twice the length of the towing vehicle. The nominal base size will still remain at 16 x 12.
Number of builds ~ I propose to limit the number of builds to 2 per member. There are a couple of reasons for this, the main reason being the longevity of the Aardman builds. These kits won't last forever and limiting the number of builds will allow us to continue with the theme for several years to come.
There have been a couple of suggestions for alternative builds for the SIG to be displayed at SMW. The Bedford build was well received last year and I propose to continue with the theme again in 2012, rules to be posted on here before the end of the year. Pat has suggested an alternative build based on a theme of military vehicles converted to civilian use, an interesting theme and I look forward to reading his rules for that.
I believe these alternative builds may bring more members into the SIG with interests other than the 'Aardman' theme. I look forward to your comments on the above proposals.

Forgive me, but if the base can only be twice as long as the towing vehicle, that would mean the caravan would need to be shorter than the towing vehicle? Would it not be better to specify a couple of sizes for the base (eg 24" x 9" and 16" x 12")? That would give us some flexibility whilst helping to make the display setup easier than loads of different sized bases?

Brian Brian, this has been my point all along, I think what I'm attempting to do is please everyone which is impossible. No matter what I come up with someone will argue that the size and width of whatever base size I stipulate can still be accomplished by swapping length for width and argue the point to the nth degree. So, I'll come up with a maximum base size to be used on the display and post accordingly.
